Caring for your tattoo after getting inked is a crucial step to ensure it heals properly and looks great for years to come. The tattooing process involves breaking the skin, which temporarily lowers its defenses against infection. Following a proper aftercare routine helps protect the area, prevents infection, and promotes optimal healing. The longevity and vibrancy of your tattoo will depend largely on how well you take care of it during the healing period.
With various aftercare methods out there, it’s easy to feel overwhelmed. At Bebop Ink, we’ve developed a recommended aftercare process to guide you:
After the tattoo
We will provide you with a second skin (such as Saniderm, or Hypafix), which is a thin, transparent, flexible film to protect new tattoos against fluids, friction, bacteria, and viruses, to put on the tattoo. Unlike plastic films, this type of film is breathable which allows moisture, vapor, and oxygen exchange for enhanced healing. Please keep the bandage on for roughly 3 - 4 days. It is shower proof but does not mean you can go swimming.
Removing the Bandage:
Before removing the bandage, make sure to wash your hands with soap
Once bandage is removed, rinse with warm water and unscented soap
Once rinsed, pat dry with a clean towel or cloth
Leave the tattoo (without scratching) for at least 24 hours so it can breath and scab
Moisturizing
Apply a thin layer of unscented lotion or coconut oil to the tattoo until the scab has fully healed. Ensure the product you use is free of alcohol or fragrances. We also carry our own Aftercare Lotion - feel free to ask about it during your next visit!
What NOT to do:
Pick or scratch the tattoo scab
Expose to direct sunlight causing sunburn
Taking the bandage off early (unless necessary)
No swimming or soaking in a hot tub
Over-moisturize with lotion
Re-bandage a film that came off
